Do-It-Yourself Bat Removal

If you feel prepared to try and remove a bat on your own, we can help. First things first, remember that no bats should be harmed throughout this removal process. Killing or harming bats is illegal in Michigan, due to their endangered species status, You could be fined or penalized should you intentionally bring them harm. Besides, we need bats to control pest populations, spread seeds, and help pollinate countless plants species. Without them, the world would be a lot worse off!

If the bat is in flight, you can get rid of it by guiding it towards a good exit point. Open some doors or windows near its location, then give it some time to find its way outside. If that doesn’t seem to be working, you can use some tools around the house to gently guide it on the correct pathway. Once it’s officially out, close all entry points, so it cannot re-enter!

If the bat is roosting, you need to approach things a bit differently. Put on gloves, then cover the bat with a bowl, box, or something similar. Once that step is done, slide a piece of cardboard between the wall and the bat, trapping the animal inside of the box or bowl. Take it outside and set the bat free.

Also, keep in mind that, if anyone had direct contact with the bat, the animal should be kept until a professional can test it for rabies. It’s always best to play it safe!
