How Do Raccoons Damage Attics?

In our 20+ years of experience, we’ve removed our fair share of animal intruders and seen our fair share of attics. Over the years, some of the worst attics we’ve seen have been inhabited by furry masked bandits, raccoons. They may be on the smaller side, but they sure are mighty.

One thing you can’t accuse raccoons of being is lazy. These determined, surprisingly strong little critters get right to work renovating once they move in. But believe me, raccoons don’t have the same end goals for their renovations that you and I do. Raccoons destroy attics by:

  • using their claws to rip apart ductwork (bye bye, A/C!), insulation, and drywall.
  • chewing on electrical wires and cables (these troublemakers are sometimes responsible for electrical fires).
  • moving insulation around, burrowing in it, and trampling it.
  • ripping up flashing (hello, leaks!), vents, soffits, and other materials to gain access.
  • defecating and urinating wherever they please.
  • bringing in fleas and parasites.

They’re also capable of ripping holes in walls or ceilings. Nasty little guys aren’t they?

Of course, the destruction isn’t limited to the attic. Having a raccoon in your home can be a major disruption to your life, as well as a health hazard and a threat to you and your pets, as these critters oftentimes carry rabies, parasites, and fleas, and can be aggressive when they feel threatened. Additionally, raccoons choose to remodel attics at all hours, including those when you’d rather be sleeping than listening to the thump, thump of footsteps.

Unfortunately, a raccoon doesn’t need much time to do a lot of damage, which is why it’s so important that raccoon intruders be dealt with swiftly and professionally.
