Bat infestations in Michigan area schools is not an uncommon problem. At Bat Removal and Prevention we have been working with Michigan school districts since 2010. Our goal is to make the process as quick and cost effective as possible. Usually working with your schools insurance company to eradicate the bat problem in a timely manner. Bat infestations must be taken very seriously. The quicker you handle it the better off the school district is. The reason for this is three fold.
1. Bat infestation is school usually results in large bat colony issues. Bat colonies double like compound interest. One random bat flying around is typically not a fluke. It is an indicator of a deeper issue. Just putting it off one year can take a small group of bats, say half a dozen, to fifty or more by the next year. Especially given the size of school structures. The Bats have a lot of room to grow undetected.
2. Bat Infestation in schools has been known to create bad press. Once the word gets out, parents stop sending their children to school until the issue is resolved. Here is a recent case in Texas where that very thing happened (recent development). This is not something anyone wants in the media if at all possible. So the sooner you can handle the issue the better for the students, parents, staff and school district. It can all be avoided if handled professionally and promptly.
3. Bat infestation in schools include not only potential rabies infection, but bat guano health risk. Histoplasma is a lung infection due to the fungus from bat guano. And infects over a hundred people per year in Michigan.
You can see the Michigan Disease Report for April of 2015 shows a growing number of those infected with Histoplasma. Due to the fact Bats hibernate in winter, this number is excessive for only recording January through April.
Now a large of amount of guano needs to exist before it becomes a problem. We have been to a number of schools, businesses and homes where bat guano was not excessive in quantity but was in a place that posed potential health risk. Usually located in or around ventilation systems.
Obviously bat guano is dangerous. But so is the potential for rabies. In fact not only do bats carry rabies, they are the number one mammal to infect humans. So school inspections by a licensed humane bat removal company is critical in assessing the damage.
Our attic and roof restoration process includes complete removal of bat guano and the application of natural micro bacteria cleaner. We offer a 5 year warranty on all our work.
